One of the biggest questions I get before an engagement session is: “What should we wear for our engagement photos?”
Whether you’re planning your session in Winnipeg, Manitoba or anywhere in the world, your outfit choices play a huge role in how your images feel.
The right outfits will elevate your photos, help you feel comfortable and confident during your session which in turn will make you look back and love these photos for decades.
This guide walks you through exactly what photographs beautifully, in every season and location.

Matching white shirts and jeans? Not necessary. Instead, choose 2 to 4 complementary tones that work together.
Cream, tan and soft blue
Rust, beige and charcoal
Olive, ivory and denim
Dusty pink, light grey and brown
Navy, tan, white
These palettes photograph beautifully whether we’re in a prairie field, downtown landscape, lakeside cabin, etc! Neutrals and earth tones really allow your background and you as the subjects to balance out perfectly.
What to avoid: Neon colours, overly bright reds and bold graphics. They reflect onto skin and can be distracting!

Texture adds depth and interest without overwhelming the image.
Beautiful options include:
Knit sweaters
Flowing chiffon or satin dresses
Linen shirts
Wool coats
Structured blazers
Layered scarves
If you love patterns, keep them simple. One patterned piece per couple is usually perfect.

Engagement sessions are more elevated than everyday life.
If you’d normally wear jeans and sneakers, swap sneaks for a neutral boot or heels. Try a structured jacket or coat instead of a hoodie. A flowy dress for movement is always a beautiful option!
When in doubt, slightly dressier photographs better.

Manitobans know this well, the season plays a big role in styling for your engagement photos. The weather can be predictable but dressing for the season is a good starting point.
Camel or cream wool coats
Neutral scarves and gloves
Fitted layers instead of bulky jackets
Light layers
Soft pastels
Subtle florals
Flowy dresses
Linen or lightweight fabrics
Warm earth tones
Rust, olive, mustard, cream
Cozy knits
Layered textures
If you’re planning a destination engagement session, apply the same idea: coordinate your outfits with the environment.

Many of my couples love to go for one casual look and one more elevated/ dressy look. This gives you versatility in the gallery and is great if you’re using these photos for Save The Dates, your wedding website, guest book or social media.
I’m always happy to review your outfit ideas or options before your session to give you my option on what I think would work the best for the location!

Confidence photographs beautifully. If you don’t feel comfortable in your outfit, it will show. Try to stay away from an outfit they you might have to adjust constantly. If you’re very aware of making sure your dress or top is perfectly positioned, it takes away from the session and your connection to your partner in that moment. Choose an outfit you can move, laugh and cuddle with your partner comfortably! This is part of my job, I will always keep my eye out if things need to be adjusted or fix a fly away hair.
